The Liver Models 2016 - ongoing
Monotype on Chinese rice paper.
The liver is a receptive material, like a copper plate treated with a soft ground. Chance forms it, determining the ‘drawings’ or etched/engraved grooves, and marks and forms: their shape, number, position, depth, direction, ‘inscribed’ an index of the lamb’s life lived. In ancient Mesopotamian liver divination practices, the Path, the Presence, and the Strength are ‘drawings’ formed by the impressions of the liver’s anatomical neighbours in the belly cavity. These models, direct prints of actual lambs' livers are printed by Gyotaku or the Japanese method of printing fish, a form of nature printing.
